Quick Overview

Just like you have choices for cell phone providers, there are lots of options when it comes to picking an Internet phone service provider. If you don’t know what it is, it is a provider that gives you phone access, through the Internet, with a monthly fee as if you were using a land line and the local phone utility company. There are differences between the two, however, in how you get your service.

Description

Internet vs Traditional Phones

A traditional landline runs through telephone poles and to your house or building and in to a phone. The land lines are subject to weather, which means storms can temporarily disrupt service if they go down for some reason. An Internet service will not go down, because it is through the Internet. If the power goes out, then you might not be able to have service, but if you have a battery on the computer, you might still be able to get through that way or even use the wi-fi connection through your phone to connect.

Internet connections are a lot cheaper to have than a regular phone line. With a landline from the utility company, you get so many minutes per month in a package. When you go over those minutes, then you have to pay extra. If the person you want to call lives far away or out of the country, the cost per minute is much higher. When you use the Internet to make your calls, there is no difference in charges. It doesn’t matter where the person is on the globe. If they have an Internet connection you can reach them at any time and it is included in the monthly fee you pay for service.

Internet Phone Service Providers

There is a lot of competition amongst Internet phone providers. They can all provide phone service for a very low rate, so deals and gimmicks are becoming commonplace in order to lure customers. Make sure you understand the plan you are getting in to before you agree to any service plan. Once you enter a plan, you are locked in for a set time and will have to have a large fee in order to get out of it. Compare providers and see who offers the best package for you and your situation, whether it is business or personal use.
